Creating a payment square

A payment square is a reusable URL where the customer enters the amount. One square, any number of payers — a donate button, a QR code on a counter, a poster.

Create one

  1. Open Payment Squares

Open Payment Squares in the Flik portal — it is in the sidebar — then Create Payment Square.

  2. Name it for yourself

Payment Square Name is how you will find it in the list later — Coffee Shop Orders, Invoice Payment. Descriptive beats clever when there are fifteen of them.

  3. Choose the type

Payment Square Type offers Simple — Customer enters amount, which is a link or QR code the customer opens themselves and types an amount into. For taking a payment in person at a counter, where you know the amount, use Till mode instead.

  4. Choose what it accepts

Checkout Method is Open Banking or Open Banking + Card. Your organisation has to be set up for whichever you pick, and it is checked as you save rather than when a customer tries to pay.

  5. Decide whether it is live yet

Active enables the square to accept payments immediately. Turn it off to prepare one ahead of time — the URL exists but will not take money.

  6. Turn on notifications if a human needs to know

Email Notifications emails you on each payment through this square, to the Notification Email you give. Useful for a donation page someone actually watches; less so for a counter taking payments all day.

Putting it in front of people

A square has one URL that does not expire and is not tied to any one customer. Put it on a donate button, print its QR code on a poster or a counter card, or paste it into an email signature. The customer opens it, types the amount, and pays.

Anyone with the URL can pay it That is the point of a square, and it is also the reason to think before printing one: the URL is durable, so it will be live for as long as the poster is on the wall. Deactivate it in the portal when it has served its purpose rather than hoping people stop scanning.

Seeing what came in

Payments made through a square appear under Transactions like any other, and the square's own page shows what has been taken through it. Because the customer chooses the amount and there is no invoice behind it, the bank statement reference is what you have to reconcile against — so give the square a name you will still recognise in a month.

A square is for many customers and an amount you do not know. If you know what one particular customer owes, create a payment link instead: one payment, an amount you set, and nothing for the customer to type in wrongly.
