Creating a payment link
A payment link is one URL for one payment of an amount you set. Send it to a customer who owes you something specific, and it is settled by the first person who pays it.
Link or square?
The portal makes two things with similar names, and picking the wrong one is the usual reason a merchant ends up chasing an amount.
| Payment link | Payment square | |
|---|---|---|
| Who sets the amount | You do, when you create it | The customer, on the page |
| How many payments | One | As many as people make |
| Use it for | An invoice, a quote, one customer who owes a known amount | A donate button, a QR code on a counter or a poster |
If you know what the customer owes, you want a payment link — this page. If you do not, you want a payment square.
Create one
-
Open Payment Links
Open Payment Links in the Flik portal — it is in the sidebar — then create a new one.
-
Enter the amount
Amount (NZD) is what the customer will pay. It is fixed once the link exists — there is no editing it afterwards, so a wrong amount means a new link.
-
Fill in the statement fields
Reference, Particulars and Code are what your customer sees on their bank statement, and what you will reconcile against. Each is limited to 12 characters — a New Zealand banking limit, not a Flik one. Put your invoice number in Reference and your trading name in Particulars; leave Code blank and Flik generates one like
FLIK-00001. -
Add a description if it helps you
Description is optional and internal. It shows against the transaction in the portal and is never shown to the customer.
-
Send the link
Copy the URL and send it however you like — email, invoice footer, message. Anyone holding it can pay it, so treat it as you would the invoice itself.
After you send it
The link appears in Payment Links with its current state, and opening it shows the transaction behind it. Once someone pays, it is done — a payment link is one transaction and takes one payment.
If creation fails
A payment link needs the rail it will be paid on to be set up first. Account-to-account needs an approved open banking application and a settlement account on your organisation; card needs card payments configured. Both are fixed in the portal rather than in a form on this page — see Errors for what each message means.
