Creating a Payment Method

A step-by-step guide to setting up payments and understanding Test Mode.

How to Create a Payment Method

1. Log in to the Portal

Go to portal.flik.co.nz and log in with your credentials.

2. Locate the Sidebar

On the left-hand side of the screen, you will see a navigation sidebar.

3. Navigate to API Keys

In the sidebar menu, find and click on API Keys. The page holds two sets of credentials: Flik Keys, which is where your payment methods live, and Pinch Keys, which are the card payment keys. This guide is about the Flik Keys section.

4. Add a New Method

Click the New Payment Method button.

5. Enter Details

The form asks for one thing:

  • Name: An internal name to help you remember which payment method this is (e.g., "Website", "POS"). Letters, numbers, spaces and hyphens only.

There are no bank account fields here any more. Your settlement account belongs to your organisation rather than to an individual key, and is set once under Settings — every key pays out to it.

There is no per-key test switch either. Whether you get a test key or a live one is decided by the Test Mode toggle in the sidebar, and the form tells you which kind you are about to create.

6. Save

Click Add to create the payment method.

7. Save Your Credentials (For Website Integration)

After entering your details, a Client ID and Client Secret will appear in the side panel. A live key reads flik_live_cid_… and flik_live_sk_…; a test key reads flik_test_cid_… and flik_test_sk_…, so you can always tell which one an integration is holding.

Important: If you plan to integrate Flik with your website, you must save these credentials now. They will not be accessible later.

If you only plan to use Payment Links or Payment Squares, you can skip this—these credentials are not needed.

Understanding Test Mode

Flik offers two ways to use Test Mode:

Global Test Mode

In the sidebar, you can toggle Test Mode on. This puts the entire portal into test mode, meaning all transactions initiated while this is on will be treated as test transactions, regardless of the payment method used.

Test Payment Methods

A payment method is a test method or a live one, and the Test Mode toggle above decides which you get: turn it on before you create the key and you get a test key, whose Client ID starts with flik_test_cid_. Transactions made with that key are always test transactions, whatever the portal is switched to later.

The list follows the same switch, so the API Keys page shows your test keys in test mode and your live keys in live mode — if a key seems to have vanished, check which mode you are in.

There is no longer a separate Test Method switch inside the creation form; the sidebar toggle is the only control.
